Introducing new products, services, and technologies; announcing cooperations with Chinese partners and exchanging ideas at forums -- the hustle and bustle of foreign exhibitors at the ongoing 2023 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) has painted an inspiring picture of China's foreign investment magnetism.
Also, several hundred A-share listed companies brought their latest offerings in the services sector on display - telecommunications, computers and information, finance, culture and tourism, sports, supply chain and business, engineering consulting and construction, health and the environment.
China's value-added services output went up 6.4 percent year-on-year in the first half of 2023, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed in July. The growth rate accelerated by 1 percentage point from the pace recorded in the first quarter.
The fast-growing services sector will provide new growth impetus to China, underpinning the world's second-largest economy amid downward pressure, said industry insiders and experts while attending the fair.
The 2023 CIFTIS, held in Beijing from Sept. 2 to 6, has attracted over 500 Global Fortune 500 companies and industry-leading enterprises, and many of them are eyeing growing opportunities amid the country's innovation-driven development and opening-up endeavors.
At the booth of Qualcomm China, visitors flocked to interact with an artificial intelligence (AI) model via a mobile phone, asking it to draw pictures. Qualcomm will also release a white paper related to AI technology offline at the fair on Tuesday. "We attach great importance to the CIFTIS, as it's a crucial platform to showcase innovations, share experience, and promote cooperation," said Meng Pu, chairman of Qualcomm China.
During this year's CIFTIS, China reaffirmed its commitment to promoting high-standard opening up and advancing Chinese modernization on all fronts through high-quality development, a step further in strengthening cooperation to propel global economic recovery.
The sound foundation of China's economic growth remains unchanged, and its determination to open up has shored up the confidence of multinationals to tap into the Chinese market, said Jacky Zou, vice president of KPMG China, adding that China is still a popular destination for global investors.

当前，服务业和服务贸易已成为我国新一轮高水平开放的重点。中国国际服务贸易交易会自创办以来，已累计吸引196个国家和地区的60余万展客商参展参会，是中国扩大开放、深化合作、引领创新的重要平台。
本届服贸会9月2日到6日举行，以“开放引领发展 合作共赢未来”为主题，持续发挥扩大开放平台作用，突出科技创新、模式创新、业态创新引领，重点聚焦文旅、金融、电信计算机与信息、供应链与商务等多个热点领域，释放对外开放信心，共促世界经济复苏。
展会上，数百家国内上市公司展示最新成果。作为我国对外开放三大盛会之一的服贸会，不仅是国际服务贸易的盛宴，而且成为众多上市公司展现创新创意的舞台。
2022年，中国服务进出口总额近6万亿元，同比增长12.9%，规模创历史新高，连续第九年位居全球第二。今年上半年，服务业增加值同比增长6.4%，比一季度加快1个百分点。增长迅速、韧性十足的中国服务业市场受到全球关注。
据了解，本届服贸会有2200余家企业线下参展，吸引500多家世界500强和行业龙头企业参会，其中金融专题参展机构国际化率达47%。
作为连续四年参展的服贸会“老朋友”，高通公司在展位上呈现了可以在安卓智能手机上运行的生成式AI大模型终端侧演示。它能迅速理解用户用自然语言描述的需求，生成结果用时不超过15秒，全程无需联网或访问云端。
高通公司中国区董事长孟樸说：“我们非常重视服贸会这一展示创新、分享经验和推动合作的重要平台。四年来持续参展、参会是对中国持续推进高水平对外开放的呼应，也表明了我们对中国市场发展前景的信心。”
毕马威中国副主席邹俊提到，从外商投资过去五年的收益来看，中国位居全球前列，而且在全球加息、资本使用成本提升的前提下，在中国投资还能保持比较好的回报率，这对于跨国企业来说很有吸引力。

Eighty-four investment projects with contracts worth over 213.8 billion yuan have been signed at the China Smart Expo that kicked off Monday in Chongqing municipality, said the organizer. The projects cover smart connected electric vehicles, biopharmaceuticals, software and information services, new energy, and new energy storage technologies. Scheduled until Wednesday, this year's expo focuses on smart, connected new energy vehicles.
智博会签约84个投资额超2000亿元：9月4日下午，2023中国国际智能产业博览会（简称“2023智博会”）在重庆开幕。在当天举行的重大招商项目集中签约活动中，共84个重大项目签约，正式合同额2138.6亿元，涵盖智能网联新能源汽车、生物医药、软件信息服务、新能源及新型储能等多个领域。

Head of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) said Monday the city will explore cooperation opportunities with the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia when their respective delegations visit the city later this year. Eddie Yue Wai-man said the regulator is also working with banks to promote more participation from Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Middle East in Hong Kong's offshore renminbi market. Hong Kong is also studying the possibility of allowing mainland investors to eventually participate in the dual-counter trading service via the Stock Connect investment channel that connects the Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Shenzhen stock exchanges, Yue said.

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee announced on Tuesday that a fireworks display will be held once again to mark National Day next month – the first time in five years. The October 1 display over Victoria Harbor was first suspended in 2019 and also got cancelled in the subsequent years due to the Covid pandemic.

German chemical giant BASF started construction of its syngas plant at the Verbund site in Zhanjiang, China, on Monday. The company will adopt unique process concepts in the syngas plant, which is scheduled to be up and running in 2025, to reduce carbon emissions compared to conventional syngas plants, contributing to BASF's sustainability goals, it said. The facility will produce syngas and hydrogen for captive use within BASF's production Verbund, which will be BASF's largest investment with up to 10 billion euros upon completion, as well as the company's third-largest Verbund site worldwide.

Thirteen pilot programs from Guangzhou were listed as the best pilot programs for opening up the services sector, according to the Promotion Conference on Greater Openness in the Services Sector, part of the 2023 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS). Those pilot programs involved the fields such as financial innovation, green development and professional services.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the Ministry of Finance have released an action plan for stabilizing the country's electronics and information manufacturing sector between 2023 and 2024, so that the industry could play a bigger role in driving manufacturing growth and contribute to early realization of industrial development goals. The plan proposes that the average added value of the computing, telecommunications and electronic equipment manufacturing sector will grow by 5 percent during the period, with the revenue of the enterprises above designed scale in the sector to exceed 24 trillion yuan. In particular, the shipment of 5G smartphones would account for more than 85 percent of the country's total phone sale by 2024, while the market share of 75-inch and larger TV sets would surpass 25 percent, and the output of solar cells would exceed 450 gigawatts.
两部门印发电子信息制造业稳增长行动方案：9月5日，工信部、财政部近日联合印发《电子信息制造业2023—2024年稳增长行动方案》，提出包括虚拟现实、视听产业、先进计算以及智能光伏等六大增长点。《行动方案》提出，引导社会资本加大对电子信息制造业投入，支持符合条件的企业用好在境内外上市融资、发行各类债券等融资工具。《行动方案》提及具体目标：即2023-2024年计算机、通信和其他电子设备制造业增加值平均增速5%左右，电子信息制造业规模以上企业营业收入突破24万亿元。在细分领域，《行动方案》首先提到到2024年，我国手机市场5G手机出货量占比超过85%，75英寸及以上彩色电视机市场份额超过25%，太阳能电池产量超过450吉瓦。
Chinese artificial intelligence company iFlytek said on Tuesday that its large language model SparkDesk is officially open to the public after the service was approved by the relevant authorities, becoming the first publicly available LLM launched by an A-share listed firm. The company said its SparkDesk has collaborated with over 10,000 enterprises in exploring the intelligent transformation industries, and more than 12,000 AI assistant applications have been developed, covering marketing, creation, programming, chatting, learning, reasoning, and other scenarios.

Shares of Chinese chipmakers rallied on a second day after Huawei officially kicked off offline sales for its latest flagship Mate 60 Pro on Sunday, triggering a buying spree. Shipments of Mate 60 Pro phones are reportedly raised to about 15 to 17 million. Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei said in a speech posted on the company's online community on Monday that Huawei is setting up a a reserve for top talent, including qualified talent from outside of the industry, in order to promote the company's research and development level. Meanwhile, Huawei announced on Monday the opening of a cloud data center in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, as part of its efforts to expand its online service offerings in the Middle East.

Luckin Coffee said on Tuesday that it sold more than 5.42 million cups of the alcohol-infused latte it rolled out with Kweichow Moutai on the first day of its launch, setting a new sales record for the Chinese coffee chain. Luckin said sales of the single item on Monday topped 100 million yuan. It far outsold the company's previous hits, such as a cheese latte that sold 1.31 million cups on its launch day, and a coconut cloud latte that sold 660,000 cups.

Chinese construction engineering giant China Petroleum Engineering and Construction has won a USD325 million contract to expand the capacity of a crude oil central processing facility of a large onshore oilfield in the United Arab Emirates. CPECC will build the ninth processing station of the Babu Oilfield's crude oil CPF, operated by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company Onshore, parent company China Petroleum Engineering Corporation announced late yesterday. The project is part of the UAE's P5 Production Increase Plan, which aims to raise the daily output of the Babu Oilfield from 485,000 buckets to 576,000 buckets. The new output increase will fully depend on the ninth processing station built by CPECC, the parent firm noted.

The Shanghai Stock Exchange signed a memorandum of understanding with the Saudi Exchange yesterday to explore cooperation opportunities in cross-listing, financial technology, environment, social and governance, data exchange and research. This is expected to promote diversity and inclusiveness in the two markets, as well as facilitate the listing of companies and the dual-listing of exchange-traded funds.

Chinese stocks fell on Tuesday with the benchmark Shanghai Composite and the Shenzhen Component each down 0.7 percent. Hong Kong stocks tumbled as the benchmark Hang Seng index sank 2.1 percent and the TECH index dropped 2.6 percent.
